Sometimes ice accumulates inside so much that opening and using a freezer becomes difficult. Defrosting the freezer is the easiest way to deal with this problem. There are a few trustworthy methods to apply. The SD PRO Appliance Repair team is advising on how to defrost the freezer quickly and effectively.
Why Is Ice Piling Up?
Water condensates and stays on shelves and the mechanism’s parts. Amount of water increases when you put in hot and warm items. Steam comes up intensively and freezes in seconds. If the icing appears too fast, it may be because of thermostat damage or a sealing band breakage. The reason is in opening the doors regularly and leaving products inside.
Defrosting Freezer – What You Should Know About It
In fact, yes. But some need it rarer than others. There are no precise criteria, you may simply monitor when icing appears. Don’t do that too often, but also don’t wait until usage becomes difficult. An old model without any auto-defrost system needs it once a month. If your fridge is No Frost, Frost Free, or Full No Frost with two compressors, once in 6 months is enough. Do it more often if the humidity in the room is high.
Importance of Defrosting
The first reason to melt ice often is basic convenience. The accumulated ice lowers the usability and boxes open becomes inconvenient. Another goal is the economy. More layers are inside, more energy is needed for a compressor to function. As a result, a freezer’s efficiency and lifespan decline. It also leads to frequent breakdowns and failure.
We advise a few methods which are practical and not harmful for an appliance. They’ll help you to defrost freezer coils well. Pick sides with the most optimal one for your defrosting purposes.
It is a long and proper way, but the most popular one. Firstly turn the whole refrigeration system off and remove the power cord from the socket. Take out all containers and bars and wash them. If your model doesn’t have a tank for melted water, put a towel under it. New designs usually have a special reservoir in the back. Now you should just wait for the freezer ice melting. Ordinarily, it takes 2 to 10 hours, depending on the thickness. You’d better leave it nightly.
Fast Techniques for Express Melting
To accelerate the process, leave the freezer deactivated for 30 minutes and then try one of the methods described below.
- Put the boiling hot water bottle in the freezer. A metal pan fits too, but with a wooden desk below, so the plastic won’t break. Change the water when it gets cooler. After 30 to 60 minutes try chopping the icing. It must depart much easier.
- Take a sprayer filled with hot water and splatter it over the walls. In 15 minutes or fewer formations will melt. Then start scraping it with a spatula. It is the safest and easiest way. You can combine it with other ways if a layer is thick.
- Take a warm wet towel and slowly wash the cabin with it. Icing will disappear soon.
Fan Use for This Purpose
It is not a desirable action. Yes, it is rapid but dangerous. In case if water touches the fan, it can short-circuit. If you still want this way, keep the blower in 20 to 30 cm from the camera and especially the sealing band.
To keep your refrigeration in good condition, manually defrosting the freezer is not enough. Also, there are things to note in the process. We are giving tips about taking care of your device.
Keeping Products Fresh
Before defrosting, every shelf must be completely free of food. There are ways to save them from spoiling.
- Insulated box with ice cubes inside. Leave it in a dark and cool place.
- Fill the big container with water and ice, then put a smaller pot in, and place food in it.
- For devices with two compressors, you can put everything in the first container while the second one is turned off. Then change them and repeat the whole process.
- Activate the SuperFrost mode the day before defrosting. It lowers the temperature from -18 to -32 degrees. That will leave products outside for a longer time. Brands like Zanussi, Electrolux, Stinol, Samsung provide that function.
- Choose a winter season if you live in a cold region. In that case, you’ll be able to leave foodstuffs on a balcony or a terrace.
Another piece of advice is not to take out food right in reservoirs. They are made of plastic and can easily break.
While the refrigeration system is turned off, it is a nice moment to wash all parts. Smells and little food pieces always stay there somehow, and the cleaning must be done regularly. Small crumbs can be easily removed with a vacuum cleaner’s tiny nozzle.
Start washing from top to bottom. Scrap it with a sponge and a cleansing solute. You can make it by yourself.
For the first one, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 liter of water. You might need about 5 liters. For the second solute, add two spoons of vinegar into the 1 liter of water. It eliminates odors well. If an unpleasant smell is too strong, put in vanilla extract or a few lemon pieces.
Dry the fridge with a fan or a towel. It is an important step because ice condenses in seconds in a wet cabin. Then turn the appliance on and wait for it to cool. Put products in again. Don’t forget to clean packages of food if needed and throw away spoiled pieces.
Do not unscrew, scrape, or gather ice with a knife and a harsh scraper. So you can damage not only the plastic but also the channel beneath it that the Freon coolant conducts. If it breaks down, you’ll have to fix it.
When warming up an ice coat with a hairdryer or a heat inductor, do not direct the hot air stream to the sealant. Otherwise, hot air will dry and loosen the material. The cell will be constantly supplied with warm air, which disrupts the refrigerator and provokes the rapid appearance of a new layer.
